These terms apply to every purchase made on this site and in our six boutiques. Placing an order means you accept them. Nothing here removes a right you hold under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
Ordering
Your order is an offer to buy. The contract forms when we send the order confirmation email, not when payment is taken — which is why a payment can occasionally be authorised and then refunded in full, and no contract exists.
We may decline an order, and will say why, in a small number of cases:
- The piece has sold in a boutique before the site caught up.
- A price or a description was visibly wrong.
- The delivery address is somewhere we cannot insure a shipment to.
- Payment cannot be verified, or a fraud check fails.
You must be eighteen or older to buy. Every piece we sell is intended for personal use; wholesale and resale require a separate written agreement.
Pricing and payment
Prices are in Indian rupees and include GST for delivery within India. For international orders the price shown excludes the destination country’s duties and taxes, which are payable by the recipient — we will estimate them before you commit, and the carrier will collect them on delivery.
We take cards, UPI, net banking and, for orders under ₹50,000 delivered in India, cash on delivery. Ready-to-wear is charged in full at checkout. A made-to-order piece is charged fifty per cent on confirmation and the balance when it is finished, before it ships.
If a price is listed wrongly we will tell you before the piece is made and you may proceed at the correct price or cancel for a full refund. We will not quietly charge the difference.
Made-to-order terms
Most of what we sell begins after you order it. The atelier days shown on each product page are the honest making time, and your written confirmation states a delivery window rather than a single date.
Changing your mind
You may change or cancel freely until the cloth is cut, which is usually the first seven to ten days, and the deposit is returned in full. After cutting we can often still change trim, lining and finish but not the silhouette; the deposit then covers the cloth already committed. Once embroidery has begun the piece cannot be altered or cancelled, because an embroidered panel cannot be recut.
What handwork means
Colour varies between dye lots and between a screen and a room. Handloom cloth carries slubs and small irregularities in the weave. Hand embroidery is not identical from one side of a panel to the other. These are the marks of the method, not defects, and they are not grounds for return — a fault, which is something failing rather than something varying, always is.
Delays
If a commission will miss its window we tell you as soon as we know rather than on the date. If the delay is ours and the piece is for a dated event, you may cancel and take a full refund including the deposit.
Delivery
Insured white-glove delivery across India, free above ₹25,000. Ready pieces dispatch in three to five working days. International delivery runs to most countries through a tracked, insured service.
Delivery dates are estimates given in good faith. We are not liable for a delay caused by a carrier, by customs, by weather or by anything else outside our control, but we will keep you informed and we will chase it on your behalf. Collection from any boutique is free and is what most bridal customers choose, because it means a final fitting on the same visit.
Title and risk
Risk passes to you when the piece is handed to you or to someone at your delivery address. Title passes only when we have received payment in full, so a piece released before the balance is settled remains ours until it is.
Please check the piece on arrival. Damage in transit should reach us within forty-eight hours with a photograph, which lets us claim against the carrier; tell us later and we will still help, but the claim may be closed.
Alterations
Alterations are free for twelve months from delivery, at any boutique or by post, on every piece we have made. You pay only the postage if you send it in. After the first year we charge at cost, which is between ₹1,500 and ₹4,000 for most adjustments and is quoted before any work starts.
Alteration carried out by anyone else ends this cover and voids any claim on the piece’s making. We will still repair it — we will simply charge for the repair.
Returns and faults
Unworn ready-to-wear may be returned within fourteen days of delivery with tags intact, refunded to the original payment method within seven working days of our check. Made-to-measure and bridal commissions cannot be returned. A faulty piece is repaired or replaced at our cost, with shipping both ways, whatever its age.
The full policy, including what falls outside it, is on the returns page and forms part of these terms.
Liability
Our liability for any order is limited to the amount you paid for it. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
Every design, photograph, sketch and piece of writing on this site belongs to House of Vastra Couture Private Limited. Buying a garment does not license its design for reproduction.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India. The courts at Mumbai, Maharashtra have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
Before either of us goes near a court, write to care@houseofvastra.com. A director reads escalations and answers within seven working days, and in fifteen years almost everything has been settled there.
